2010 SEMMY WinnerLet’s skip the corny, canned jokes and the awkward moments at the podium and just open the envelope, shall we? Ladies and gentlemen, the winner of the 2010 SEMMY Award in the Search Tech category is … drum-roll, please …

The SEO geeks guide to information retrieval
David Harry, Huomah | 1/5/09

Congratulations to our winner! Here’s a choice bit from the winning post:

To me this thing of ours is an art form. The pragmatic can argue the semantics of what is art, regardless, to me it is such. And a dimensionally singular SEO is one that is limited in that art. Much like a traditional artist progresses from still life and pencil to painting and sculpting, from brushes to chisels, an SEO should seek out other elements related to the discipline. We should learn knowledge management and algorithms with the same verve we apply to playing in social media.

The top two runners-up in public voting were:

Getting URLs outta Google – the good, the popular, and the definitive way
Sebastian X | 1/14/08

Congratulations to our winner! Here’s a choice bit from the winning post:

First of all, if you really want that search engines don’t index your stuff, you must allow them to crawl it. And no, that’s not an oxymoron. At the moment there’s no such thing as an indexer directive on site-level. You can’t forbid indexing in robots.txt. All indexer directives require crawling of the URLs that you want to keep out of the SERPs. Of course that doesn’t mean you should serve search engine crawlers a book from each forbidden URL.

Runners-Up

The top two runners-up in public voting were:

  1. SEM Basics: How to Use a Proxy IP in Firefox
    Nick Wilsdon | 11/1/08
  2. Managing Robot’s Access To Your Website
Vanessa Fox, Jane and Robot | 6/4/08

The winner and runners-up are welcome to grab the appropriate badge — we have a badge for both winners and runners-up.

Which Is Better For SEO: Shared or Dedicated IPs
Lisa Barone, Bruce Clay Blog | 3/6/07

Congratulations to our winner! Here’s a choice bit from the winning post:

It’s been said that about 3 percent of all Web sites have dedicated IPs, with the other 97 percent resting on shared IPs. Research was then conducted analyzing the top 50 results for certain queries in the various search engines. The research found that 90 percent of the top-50 results were using dedicated IP numbers.

Three percent of Web sites use them, and 90 percent of Web sites in the top 50 results have them. Counterintuitive, don’t you think?

Runners-Up

The top two runners-up in public voting were:

  1. When Choosing an eCommerce System, Remember the Search Engines
Bill Slawski, SEO by the Sea | 6/20/07
  2. What To Look For in a SEO Friendly E-Commerce Application
    David Wallace, SearchRank | 1/4/07
