Let’s skip the corny, canned jokes and the awkward moments at the podium and just open the envelope, shall we? Ladies and gentlemen, the winner of the 2010 SEMMY Award in the Google category is … drum-roll, please …
Google Enables Real Time Spam and More
Rae Hoffman, Outspoken Media | 12/9/09
Congratulations to our winner! Here’s a choice bit from the winning post:
I think the aspect of this “real time search” that frankly, scared the hell out of me the most, is the ability for predators to reach out to children with no way to stop them. At this point, I see no way to remove real time search from showing in the results. Safe search, even on the highest setting, to date, does not remove them. Suddenly, anyone can talk to my child while they surf Google.

The top two runners-up in public voting were:

The SEO geeks guide to information retrieval
David Harry, Huomah | 1/5/09
Congratulations to our winner! Here’s a choice bit from the winning post:
To me this thing of ours is an art form. The pragmatic can argue the semantics of what is art, regardless, to me it is such. And a dimensionally singular SEO is one that is limited in that art. Much like a traditional artist progresses from still life and pencil to painting and sculpting, from brushes to chisels, an SEO should seek out other elements related to the discipline. We should learn knowledge management and algorithms with the same verve we apply to playing in social media.

Everyday Usability – 14-Point Checklist for Success
Kimberly Krause-Berg, Website Magazine | 5/1/09
Congratulations to our winner! Here’s a choice bit from the winning post:
User behaviors change and evolve and it’s up to website owners to adapt. Constant attention must be given to how users and search engines interact with your site to ensure that you not only attract visitors, but give them reasons to come back. Because as every Web professional knows, the more users interact with your site, the better the odds they convert.

Thinking Positively About Negative Reviews
Linda Bustos, Get Elastic | 1/29/09
Congratulations to our winner! Here’s a choice bit from the winning post:
The recent Belkin fiasco is a perfect example of why you should welcome negative reviews – without a few negatives the reviews seem inauthentic. Customers want to see a mix of positive and negative reviews – so offer them, but make sure you support the customer who wants additional information, alternative suggestions or personal assistance.

10 Questions to Evaluate a Social Media ‘Expert’
Ian Lurie, Conversation Marketing | 7/21/09
Congratulations to our winner! Here’s a choice bit from the winning post:
4: What’s a social media campaign?
“Voting something to the front page of Digg using my proxy server and 35 computers”. Flee the scene, and get to a minimum safe distance as soon as possible. The Digg brigade may be on its way. Whatever you do, don’t hire them. While this is a valid tactic (I guess), it’s not a campaign. Nor does it generate long term results in most cases.

Does Your Copy Need a Makeover? 7 Tests That Measure the Verbal Impact of Your Business Message
Renne Leatto, i. karumbah | 12/1/09
Congratulations to our winner! Here’s a choice bit from the winning post:
But a good ranking and lots of traffic doesn’t make sales, it only provides you with more potential customers to pitch. That’s why I have a problem with techie ranking consultants who advise clients to ignore or even sacrifice good copywriting on their web pages in favor of some SEO equation (such as, 7% keywords = page one ranking). The copy your visitors read must still grab and convince them, or they’ll move on to one of your competitors who does a better job of that.

Ignore the Silly Man, SEO Still Matters For SMBs
Lisa Barone, Outspoken Media | 12/16/09
Congratulations to our winner! Here’s a choice bit from the winning post:
Robert should know better. It’s just misguided for him to say that SEO isn’t important for a small business owner and to advise them not to worry about it. It’s irresponsible because, at least in some circles, Robert Scoble still has some street cred. People might actually believe him. And frankly, that’s scary. On a lot of levels.
